A backflow prevention device is used to protect water supplies from contamination caused by Back siphonage or backpressure. The water supply bylaw (Municipal code, Chapter 851) was enacted in October 2007 to ensure the safety of potable water.
Many states and / or local municipalities require a Backflow prevention survey testing of backpressure and the annual testing of backflow prevention assemblies.
